92nd Anniversary
Ceremonial Parade 19 Dec 10 |
|
On Sunday 19th December the
unit celebrated its 92nd birthday by staging it annual
Ceremonial Parade at the historic Georges Heights parade
ground in front of approx. 200 guests.
The previous day was a gruelling
day of drill practice preparing for the main event the
following day. The weather on both days was overcast and cool
- warm. We were thankful for the cooler than expected
temperatures for the parade.
We were
honoured to have LTCOL Chaloner as our Reviewing Officer, an
officer with an extensive & distinguished background of
service in the Australian Special Forces.
In
addition, we were delighted to have the following
distinguished guests to present awards: AC 22 Bn CAPT Voghel,
President & Secretary Mosman RSL Mr & Mrs Ian &
Eileen Henderson, President Kirribili RSL Mr David McDowell,
Secretary N.Syd Small Bore Rifle Club Mrs Ursula Bayliss as
well as all the members of the Hornsby RSL Pipe Band.
The unit
turned on a spectacular display of drill throughout the course
of the parade, in particular their Advance in Review Order was
near perfect.
We were
also very thankful that so many parents, friends and family
members also joined to watch the parade and enjoy a unit
picnic afterwards.

Unit "Champion

The annual "Champion Marksman" award
is presented at our end of year Ceremonial Parade. The winner of
the trophy will be the cadet who has scored the lowest average
grouping from the best 2 (of the 4) .22 cal range shoots to be
conducted throughout 2010. All competitors for the trophy must
compete in at least 2 of the championship range shoots this
year.
The practice was conducted at 50m in the lying,
supported position. The rifles used were .22cal Bruno
bolt-actions with 4x scope. Because the recoil of this rifle
is negligible its ideal to learn the basic principles
of marksmanship on.
Prior to firing on the range,
all participants were required to individually demonstrate
complete proficiency in the "states of weapon

ADF Long Tan Leadership
& Teamwork Award 26 Nov 10 |
|
Every year the ADF present awards for "Excellence
in Student Leadership" within schools across Australia. These awards are presented to
those students who demonstrate leadership qualities & service to their
community/school.
The ADF
Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards started in 2006
and aim to recognise students who demonstrate leadership and
teamwork within both the school and the broader local community. At the same time, they recognise those who display
strong values, such as doing one’s best, respect for others
and “mateship”, that are integral to Australian society.
The awards
are an important initiative by the Australian Government in
conjunction with the Australian Defence Force designed to encourage senior students – tomorrow’s leaders – to
actively participate in the life of their schools and local
communities.
We are delighted to announce
that today SSGT Boseley has received this prestigious award
at Marist College in 2010. SSGT Boseley also felt that his
success and involvement in cadets played a key role in helping
him secure this award. He was officially presented his award by the
Principal, Brother Peter Corr on 26 Nov 10.
On behalf of all unit members,
congratulations and very well done!

NAT Adventure Training Award
(ATA) - TAS April 2010 |
|
The ATA is the pinnacle
of cadet training that all cadets aspire to. This is a
very tough and highly challenging
course. Nominees must be 16+ and completed a minimum of
2-years
of cadet training. Many are not able to meet the intensive demands placed
on them by this course. This is not a course in the true
sense of the word as there is no instruction - cadets must
arrive well prepared to be assessed on the following key areas
of their cadet training:
- Navigation,
- RATEL,
- 1st Aid,
- Fieldcraft,
- Movement by Day
& Night,
- Physical fitness,
- Teamwork,
- Survival,
- Living in the Field,
and
- Leadership
206 ACU is proud to announce
that two (out of two) of our cadets achieved
this prestigious award at the recent course held in TAS from
3 - 10th April 2010.
For the 2nd time, this course
was run as a National course and staged in TAS. Nominees were
of the highest standard and comprised the best cadets from

NAT Adventure Training Award
(ATA) - TAS April 2009 |
|
The ATA is the pinnacle
of cadet training that all cadets aspire to. This is a
very tough and highly challenging
course. Nominees must be 16+ and completed a minimum of
2-years
of cadet training. Many are not able to meet the intensive demands placed
on them by this course. This is not a course in the true
sense of the word as there is no instruction - cadets must
arrive well prepared to be assessed on the following key areas
of their cadet training:
- Navigation,
- RATEL,
- 1st Aid,
- Fieldcraft,
- Movement by Day
& Night,
- Physical fitness,
- Teamwork,
- Living in the Field,
and
- Leadership
206 ACU is proud to announce
that two (out of two) of our cadets achieved
this prestigious award at the recent course held in TAS from
12 - 18th April 2009. 206 ACU has not had an ATA recipient
since July 2006.
For the first time this course
was run as a National course and staged in TAS. Nominees were
of the highest standard and comprised the best cadets from
each State Regional Brigade.

ADF Long Tan Leadership
& Teamwork Award 28-Oct-08 |
|
We are delighted to announce
that today SSGT Stefanatos has received this prestigious award
at Marist College in 2008. SSGT Stefanatos also felt that his
success and involvement in cadets played a key role in helping
him secure this award. He was officially presented his award by the
Principal, Brother Peter Corr on 28 Oct 08.
On behalf of all unit members,
congratulations and very well done!

National Chief of Army
Challenge (COAC) 7-9th Mar 08 |
|
The Chief of Army Challenge is
a national competition that pits the best cadets from each
state against each other in a 48-hr fight "epic
battle" for supremacy. 206
ACU won the right to present NSW at the COAC at AFX in
July-07.
Since winning the right to represent NSW at COAC the 10
members of the team have trained hard and long to prepare
themselves for some tough interstate competition.
Assessments were both written
and practical and included:
- Ratel
- 1st Aid
- Living in the field
- AusSteyr live fire
- OP exercise
- Drill
- Mil History
- Leadership & teamwork
We were officially notified by
the SCO that the team only narrowly missed taking out 2nd
place and came in 3rd (out of 8 teams). Coming in at 3rd is
the best result ever achieved by NSW in this
competition.
We can now rightly claim that
not only is 206 the best unit in NSW but also arguably in the
top 3 units in the country. An outstanding effort by the whole
team - competing and beating many of the country's best
cadets.

Unit COAC Night EX
24-Nov-07 |
|
After the units success at the
Brigade level COAC at AFX-07 CUO Mollard suggested that the
unit start its own company level COAC at some stage. As a
result, CAPT Wark along with other OOC and senior cadet DS
planned and staged our first unit COAC as the Nightex for
Biv-4/07. The main aims of the exercise were to further foster
and develop the espirit de corps, leadership, initiative &
teamwork that had been so instrumental in the units Brigade
victory (see item on Brigade COAC below for further info).
The competition was based around
general cadet skills and knowledge with every platoon from
recruits right through to seniors competing fiercely for
dominance. The final result was very close being a credit to
all who participated.
Ultimately, it was our senior
cadets in 1 Platoon who managed to achieve at the highest
level and snatch victory (mainly thanks to their dominance in
the casualty scenario). The tabulated final results of the
exercise can be downloaded by clicking here.
We look forward to making this
very worthwhile exercise part of our annual field training
program. Congratulations to all members of 1 Platoon who
competed in the competition.

This year we have resurrected the
unit annual "Champion Marksman" award to be
presented at our end of year Ceremonial Parade. The winner of
the trophy will be the cadet who has scored the lowest average
grouping from 2 (of the 3) .22 cal range shoots to be

As part of the units
preparation and training for their Chief of Army Challenge
Challenge Team our foster unit (5-CSSB) has been staging some
useful and constructive training. Part of this training
included States of Weapon Readiness (AUSSteyr) and an Army PT
Beep Test.
The Beep Test is conducted by
running a series of 20m laps in increasing number and tempo
until you can no longer do anymore. The minimum level achieved
by the 9-cadets participating was 8.1 a very good achievement.
In 3rd place was CPL Donaldson with Level 11.12 and 2nd place
was CPL De Jong with Level 12.6. The record at 5-CSSB was
Level 13.6, however in 1st place with a incredible level of

ADF PAC/PAMS Display
9-Aug-07 |
|
On Thur 9 Aug 07 a
comprehensive display was staged at Victoria Barracks (syd) by
many units of the ADF as part of their hosting a visit by many
senior regional and allied military commanders.
206 ACU was proud to be asked by
Bde HQ to man an AAC display to give these senior leaders an
understanding of cadets as well as the opportunity to discuss
the organisation directly with youth members.
We were also lucky to receive a
visit to the display stand by the current Chief of Army, LT
GEN Leahy, AO. LT GEN Leahy took some time to chat with the cadets
about their cadet experiences and plans for the future.
We we also pleased that senior
ADF officers had invited the AAC to be part of the overall ADF
effort to host regional military commanders on their visit
to Australia.

In the lead up to AFX-07, all
the units in 22 Bn (of which 206 ACU is part) were given the
opportunity to participate in the Bde COAC to be held on the
second last day of AFX-07. Only one unit (other than 206)
nominated a cadet to participate.
The competition for supremacy
among the six Bn's of the Bde was fierce on the day. Each Bn
team was rotated through 6 varied leadership and initiative
exercises focused on cadet training and teamwork.
After overcoming the many
hurdles and challenges throughout the week on AFX-07 the
entire 22 Bn burst into excited applause and cheering when the
CO NSW Bde, LTCOL Major announced that this years winners of
the Bde COAC was the 22 Bn team!!
For now, 22 Bn and 206 ACU have
proved they can take on and beat the best in the Bde. Can they
go on to show they are also the best in the country at the

Many of our recruits had never

this they performed very well indeed. In fact, 2 of the 3 top
places were taken out by new recruits this time. The practice was conducted at 50m in the lying,

Aust Defence Force
Academy (ADFA) 2008 |
|
The unit would like to offer
special congratulations to our CSM, SGT Guthrie, for being
successful in her application to be accepted for Army Officer
Training at ADFA in 2008.
SGT Guthrie has every right to
be very proud of her incredible achievement. Our CSM is one of
the few, selected from among the many applicants who the Army
believes have what it takes to be an Officer (and future
leader) within it ranks. At ADFA and subsequently at RMC,
Duntroon she will face challenges far exceeding any she has
faced before and we have every confidence she will rise to
those challenges in the same way she has done at the unit.
This selection process is not
easy so its quite an honour for the CSM personally and a
credit to her growth as a cadet within the unit.
An outstanding effort.

For Australia Day 2007, over
70 Australian government departments and agencies implemented
the medallion program to enhance its Australia Day program.
Through presenting the medallions, heads of government
departments and agencies can acknowledge their employees'
contributions, either on special projects that have made a
significant contribution to the nation or simply outstanding
performance for core duties.
Eight members of the Australian
Army Cadets were awarded an Australia Day Achievement
Medallion by the Department of Defence on Australia Day,
26 January 2007.
206 ACU is proud to announce
that their OC CAPT Wark was recently awarded an Australia Day

appreciation of the service you have given and the significant
contribution made to your unit over the relatively short
period you have been a member of the Australian Army Cadets.
Your professionalism in accepting the responsibilities of the
Commanding Officer in his absence has ensured the continued
existence of your unit. Your enthusiasm and commitment
have been commendable and you can be justly proud of your
achievement."

1-Platoon (SNR), Gold
Falcon Certification 2006 |
|
The Gold Falcon certification is the pinnacle
of cadet training in 206 ACU (prior to embarking further leadership responsibility as an
NCO). The course is run over
a 12-month period during the 1-PLT training cycle. The
course is not easy and many cadets are not assessed as
competent on their first attempt. However, the journey is just
as important as the destination and the challenges presented
prove very rewarding to cadets and NCO's alike.
Throughout the Gold Falcon
training cycle cadets are assessed in the following areas:
first aid treatments (practical), CASEVAC training exercise
(practical), navigational ROGAIN, pack-march, swimming
safety, senior drill standards, navigational resection
(practical), physical fitness training, camo &
concealment, recon exercise, attendance & a theory test.
The Gold Falcon award recipients
for 2006 are: CDT Yeung, CDT De Jong & CDT Donaldson. The tabulated
course results can be downloaded by clicking here.
In addition, a Student of Merit
and Platoon Dux are also awarded. The Student of Merit is
awarded to the cadet displaying the most outstanding overall performance
in the Gold Falcon (1-PLT) training. The Platoon Dux is awarded to the cadet who performed best in the
Gold Falcon Theory Test.

areas of cadet training that logically build upon a cadets
initial recruit training.
Throughout the Silver 303
training cycle cadets are assessed in the following areas:
survival (practical), CASEVAC training exercise (practical),
fieldcraft, swimming safety, intermediate drill standards,
NAVEX (practical), physical fitness training, personal dress
standard, attendance & a theory test.
The Silver 303 award recipients
for course 2/2006 are: CDT Federico, CDT Goh, CDT Hall, CDT
McIntosh & CDT Ye. The tabulated course results can be downloaded by clicking

In addition, a Student of Merit
and Platoon Dux are also awarded. The Student of Merit is
awarded to the cadet displaying the most outstanding overall performance in

introduction to cadet life and to 206 ACU.
Throughout the Maroon Beret
training cycle cadets are assessed in the following areas:

basic drill standards, basic physical fitness training,
personal dress standards, attendance & a theory test.

Unit "Champion
Marksman" Shoot (.22cal) 19-Nov-06 |
|
This is the first time the unit
has had an opportunity to run a range practice at Hornsby
since a devastating fire at the beginning of the year
destroyed the club house. Finally, the HSBRC is back on its
feet and welcoming us back to the range.
Many of our recruits had never
participated in a live-fire range practice before, yet despite
this they performed very well in what was stifling heat at
times. The practice was conducted at 50m in the lying,
supported position. The rifles used were .22cal Bruno
bolt-actions with 4x scope. Because the recoil of this rifle
is negligible to none its ideal to learn the basic principles
of marksmanship on.
Prior to firing on the range,
all participants were required to individually demonstrate
complete proficiency in the "states of weapon
readiness" as per a regular Army range practice. By doing
this we help ensure that every live-fire activity is as safe
as it possibly can be.
NB. Members of our unit
participate in this activity voluntarily and as civilians
only. This is not an AAC sponsored or approved activity.
The tabulated results of the
practice can be downloaded by clicking here.

Every year the CO NSW AAC BDE
and the NSW BDE SCO scour high and low throughout the state
for next years NSW Cadet Adjutant and RSM. Through his own
very high standard of drill, dress and bearing, as well as his
dedication and commitment to service in the AAC, WO2 Freiberg
has been chosen above all other NSW candidates to be appointed
as NSW Cadet RSM 2007.
206 ACU is very proud of WO2
Freibergs outstanding personal achievement. While we are very
sad to lose him from the unit we wish him all the very best in
his new appointment next year. We hope he can
"sprinkle" a little "206" throughout the
BDE.

Due to 206 ACU's close
association with 18 Bn Memorial Rifle Club we were fortunate to
have them host a 303 shoot for senior cadets. This was the
first time in several years that we have been able to
participate in such a shoot. Many of the cadets had never
fired a high calibre, centre-fire rifle before and yet acquitted
themselves well at 200m.

Best Instructor (1CRTB) -
AFX Singleton July 2005 |

Every year a number of NCOs
and officers from our unit offer to assist as staff, training
cadets on Annual Camp rather than enjoying other individual
training. It is the spirit of giving back something to the
Corps and dedication to service that leads our cadets and
officers to help out in this and many other ways. CPL
McFarlane so excelled in this endeavour that she beat over 30
other cadet NCO instructors to be awarded "Best
Instructor on Course" by the senior Recruit Training
Battalion Officers and RSM. Congratulations and very well done
on this outstanding achievement! .
